Print Sizes Explained: A Complete Size Guide

Wall art sizes run from 6 × 6 inches to 50 × 108. For a single piece, aim for roughly two-thirds the width of the wall or the furniture beneath it — about 50 to 63 inches wide above a standard 84-inch sofa. If you are torn between two sizes, take the larger one.

Print-on-demand sizes are not a fixed list of frame sizes. The ladder scales to the proportions of the image, so a 4:5 painting and a 2:3 photograph produce different numbers from the same rungs. Fine Art America offers fifteen steps, from 6 × 6 inches up to 50 × 108 for panoramas, on canvas, framed prints, metal, acrylic, wood and paper.

For a standard 4:5 image, those steps land here: 6.5 × 8, 8 × 10, 9.5 × 12, 11 × 14, 12.5 × 16, 16 × 20, 19 × 24, 24 × 30, 28 × 36, 32 × 40, 38 × 48 and 47.5 × 60. Posters are the exception, running 8 × 10 to 48 × 60.

Two things are worth knowing before you choose. On any given image, paper prints tend to offer one step smaller than the rigid formats do. And the top of the ladder is capped by the file rather than by the catalog: a low-resolution scan simply stops offering sizes above a certain point, which is why one artwork offers twelve options and another offers seven.

Aspect ratios: the shape decides the numbers

Before you pick a size, know the shape. The ratio is fixed by the artwork unless you crop it, and it determines which sizes even exist.

RatioSizes it producesWhere it comes from
1:1 square8 × 8, 12 × 12, 16 × 16, 20 × 20, 30 × 30Social-media crops, grid arrangements, gallery walls
4:58 × 10, 11 × 14 (close), 16 × 20, 24 × 30, 32 × 40The default frame ratio in the US; most paintings sit near it
2:38 × 12, 12 × 18, 16 × 24, 20 × 30, 24 × 3635mm film and full-frame digital photography
3:49 × 12, 12 × 16, 18 × 24, 30 × 40Phone cameras, micro four thirds, most tablets
Panoramic12 × 36, 20 × 60, up to 50 × 108Stitched landscapes, cityscapes, above a sofa or headboard

If your wall wants a shape the artwork does not have, crop rather than distort. Most product pages let you request a vertical, horizontal or square crop of the same image — the algorithm takes it from the center, so check the preview before ordering anything with a subject near an edge.

One warning about 11 × 14: it is the most common ready-made frame size in the United States, but it is not quite the same ratio as 8 × 10 or 16 × 20. Scaling between them loses a sliver at two edges. It rarely matters — occasionally it clips a signature.

What size for which wall

The single most common mistake in buying art is buying it too small. Two rules prevent it.

Over furniture: the art should be about two-thirds the width of the piece below it, and never less than half. On a bare wall: the art — or the whole group, measured across — should fill 60 to 75% of the available width.

Hang whatever you choose with its center 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of a sofa back and the bottom of the frame.

If you are between two sizes, take the larger one. An oversized piece reads as deliberate; an undersized one reads as a mistake, and no amount of good framing rescues it.

The size you buy is not the size that arrives

Every product measures something slightly different, and the gap between the number on the button and the space on the wall catches people out.

ProductWhat the size refers toWhat arrives
Art print / posterThe image areaAdd a 1-inch white border all round — a 16 × 20 image is a 18 × 22 sheet
Rolled canvasThe image areaAdd a 2½-inch white margin all round for stretching later
Stretched canvasThe face of the finished pieceExactly that, plus ⅝ or 1½ inches of depth
Metal, acrylic, woodThe panelExactly that, standing ¾ to 1½ inches off the wall
Framed printThe print inside the frameAdd twice the mat width and twice the frame width to each dimension

That last row is the one that surprises people. A 16 × 20 print, with a 2-inch mat and a 1½-inch molding, occupies 23 × 27 inches of wall — a third more area than the number you selected. Size the wall to the finished frame.

Resolution: the size you can print

How large you can go is set by the file. The working rule is 300 pixels per inch for a print you will stand close to, and 150 ppi as the floor for anything viewed from across a room.

File sizeMax at 300 ppiMax at 150 ppi
2,000 × 2,500 px6.7 × 8.3 in13 × 17 in
3,000 × 3,750 px10 × 12.5 in20 × 25 in
4,500 × 5,600 px15 × 19 in30 × 37 in
6,000 × 7,500 px20 × 25 in40 × 50 in
9,000 × 11,250 px30 × 37.5 in60 × 75 in

Viewing distance does most of the work. A 40 × 50 print at 150 ppi looks clean from six feet, which is where you will actually stand. The rule only bites on small prints held at reading distance and on images with fine text.

When you are buying rather than uploading, this is handled for you: the available sizes stop where the file stops. If a piece you love only offers sizes up to 20 × 30, that is the honest limit of the scan, and no amount of upscaling changes what was captured.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good default art print size?

24 × 30 inches is a safe single-piece default: it suits a standard sofa or bed wall and reads as substantial without dominating a room. For gallery walls and smaller groupings, 11 × 14 and 16 × 20 are the workhorses, largely because ready-made frames and mats in those sizes are easy to find.

What size art should go above a sofa?

About two-thirds the sofa's width. Above a standard 84-inch sofa that means a piece 50 to 63 inches wide, either as one work or as a group measured across the whole arrangement. Hang it with its center 57 to 60 inches from the floor and 6 to 10 inches above the sofa back.

What is the largest size a print can be?

Up to 50 × 108 inches for panoramic images on canvas, framed prints, metal and paper, with most standard-proportion images topping out with a 60-inch long side. The real limit is usually the file: available sizes are capped at the resolution of the original, so a low-resolution scan may stop well short.

Do art prints come with a border?

Paper prints and posters include a 1-inch white border around the image, so a 16 × 20 image arrives as an 18 × 22 sheet. The border exists so the print can be framed and matted without cutting into the image. Rolled canvas gets a 2½-inch margin instead, for stretching over bars.

What resolution do I need to print 24 × 36 inches?

About 7,200 × 10,800 pixels for a full 300 ppi, or roughly 3,600 × 5,400 pixels at 150 ppi, which is entirely adequate for a piece viewed from more than a few feet away. Most modern camera files fall between those two figures, which is why large prints from ordinary cameras usually look fine.

How much bigger is a framed print than the print size?

Add twice the mat width and twice the frame width to each dimension. A 16 × 20 print with a 2-inch mat and a 1½-inch molding occupies 23 × 27 inches. A 24 × 30 print with a 3-inch mat and a 2-inch molding occupies 34 × 40. Always plan the wall around the finished frame.

Measure the wall, take the larger of the two sizes you are torn between, and browse canvas prints, art prints, framed prints or unframed art prints. Everything is printed to order, so the size you choose is made for you rather than picked off a shelf.
