It has been difficult to classify Gustav Klimt throughout his life and after his death. Some people classify the artist as a symbolist. Other critics state he is a forerunner of the Art Nouveau movement. Many critics have also tried to place him in the Modernist movement. However, everyone agrees that Klimt’s art is in a class by itself — unable to be processed under a label. Recently, the Studio of Lights in Paris, France unveiled a digital work of the art of Gustav Klimt, the legendary Austrian symbolist painter, that allows people to walk through and experience his designs a different way in a 35-minute tour.

Klimt’s Genius

This exhibition brings to mind the majesty and beauty of the artist. Klimt, rather than merely painting landscapes or realistic pictures of women, instead focused on eroticism and the bodies of women. Klimt’s use of color and light celebrates women, and the men who love them. Rather than women returning the passionate feelings of men, they are seen instead as impassive objects who merely receive love and don’t return it. Klimt’s view of love during the late 19th century and the early part of the 20th century was nothing short of revolutionary.

Today, Klimt’s masterpieces sell for hundreds of millions of dollars. For example, Klimt’s piece entitled “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” sold in 2006 for 135 million dollars, which was the most expensive painting sold at the time. Klimt’s most famous painting, “The Kiss”, is valued at over $200 million.

Klimt and Home Decor

Although Klimt’s works are beautiful, and out of the reach of all but the wealthiest art collectors, you can still incorporate pieces of Klimt’s mastery in your home. For example, a smaller version of “The Kiss”, which is a large art piece is available for display. If you want the piece to have a more dramatic impact in your home, you can get the large, full painting of the erotic pose.

In addition to “The Kiss”, two of Klimt’s paintings of trees, are also available, one more modern and contemporary with the other. You could pair one of the trees paintings with some of Klimt’s flora work as well, such as “Flower Garden”.

If Klimt’s romantic portraits are more your style, and you are thinking about using romance and a little shine to decorate your bedroom, a grouping of three different paintings, “The Kiss”,
“Fulfilment Stocklet Frieze” and “The Maiden” could all be used together as a focal point of the room. Klimt represents a departure from the everyday art prints.

Klimt’s mastery can also be celebrated with throw pillows depicting his art, thrown against a neutral bed or couch. Several collections of Klimt could be made based on his subjects — male/female relationships like “The Kiss”, the sensuality of the female body, such as “Danae”, or a pastoral scene, such as “Farm Garden with Sunflowers”.

However you choose to display Klimt, his work is sure to make an impact in your home, and bring a fresh, bold look to your space.
