Have you done this recently? Have you been busy on your phone or your computer, and you completely ignored your children or your partner because you were too involved in what you were doing. Did they get mad at you? Or maybe this has happened to you, where you told your partner an entire long story about your boss at work–how he or she always gives someone else credit for something that you have done, and you get mad because they didn’t listen to you. Let’s face it, a lot of us do not listen very well, although we want everyone to listen to us. We are guilty of all of this “not listening” just like you are. That is why the pieces done by Brent Schreiber are so interesting, because they invite you to listen and explore.

Works

Brent is best known for his “Listen” series. He began the series with a side portrait of a woman with her hair up, and wearing headphones, which had one word printed on the side of the headphones, “God”. The artist continues to explore themes around God, faith, spirituality, hope, religion and the human bonds between people, as well as the relationship with people and their religious experiences. The artist’s collection, which portrays women, children and objects of many different religions, has been very well received by art critics.

There are some art pieces in the series that intrigue us. “Listen #6” is also titled “Job” which intrigues us. Job is a Biblical figure which represents suffering and pain. In Schreiber’s work, Job is portrayed as a muscular, gray-headed, bearded man, with shoulder tattoos, and a set of black headphones, which he is not wearing. His face shows hidden suffering, which is in line with Job’s passages in the Bible. The artist has also explored themes of sexuality and death within the “Listen” series as well.

If you are interested in exploring the relationships between men, women, religion and the symbolisms of love, death, religion, general spirituality, and humans’ relationship with both the physical and spiritual worlds. The “Listen” series would make a wonderful addition to any home or office, and would serve as a constant reminder to stay focused and aware of the attention you pay to the people around you. We don’t know about you, but we need a constant reminder to listen and focus on people around us, because we do not always listen as effectively as we could. So, take a minute and consider purchasing a piece from the “Listen” series. Who knows, just having a picture in front of you or behind you in your office may help you to be a better listener, or even a better communicator–which would make you the envy of all of your friends.
