Although we do not often quote an Indiana Jones film (although we probably should start), in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” Belloq, the French archeologist, tells Indiana Jones that “All your life has been spent in pursuit in archaeological relics. Inside the Ark are treasures beyond your wildest aspirations. You want to see it opened as well as I. Indiana, we are simply passing through history. This, this IS history.”. We get it, history is important, because it is part of who we are.

For this reason, we offer a collection of historical photographs and drawings. People began taking photographs in the first half of the 19th century, and has captured some of the most magnificent, tragic and amazing photographs for the last nearly 200 years. Historical photographs and drawings, whether controversial or beautiful, represent an image of a world that no longer exists. These photographs or drawings could be used in a study, reading room, library, classroom, or a den as a way of saying to people that you understand the meaning and relevance of history.

Historical Photos or Drawings of People

Many of the historical photographs or drawings of people evoke memories of tragedy and triumph. There are photographs of people who have been assassinated, such as John F. Kennedy, as well as photographs of people who were the assassins, such as Gavrilo Princip, the young man whose assassination of Archduke Ferdinand led to the flaring up of tensions that began World War I. The man who has created enough furor over the last 150 years to last another 150 years, Charles Darwin, is also here. Many Civil War photographs are here: Abraham Lincoln, whose election led to the Civil War; as well as photos of Ulysses Grant and Robert E. Lee.

We do need to issue a caveat here, of course. There are historical photographs and drawings that are not flattering or even politically correct, so be aware of that before you go exploring.

Historical Drawings or Photos of Places or Events

There are also some interesting drawings and photos of events displayed on our site. There is a photo of one of the very first car accidents for example, which is interesting considering we have been crashing into each other for the last 100 years. There are pictures of trains getting steam baths, and engines revving for the day’s journey. A drawing of an epic sailing battle during the America’s Cup in 1885 can be found here as well. The Hindenberg’s explosion and crash is also pictured here. There are also beautiful scenes as well, such as the Eiffel Tower during the Paris World’s Fair of 1900, or the Arc de Triomphe in 1890. Pictures of tanks, planes and even bombs are available as well.

Whether you are a history buff, or you are a collector of amazing photographs, you are sure to find something you like here. We do not always agree with the present, but we can all agree that the past is something worth remembering –and in this case–framing.
